Cloud, VPS, or Bare Metal: Which Hosting Type Fits Your Work?
A container cloud, a VPS, or a server of your own. Each one sets your speed, your bill, and how much work lands on your desk. Here is how to choose.
Two years ago a Gujarat logistics firm moved its tracking dashboard. It moved off a shared hosting plan. The new plan was called a "cloud server." The site got faster. Then their driver app began to fail. It failed when lots of drivers used it at once. The same traffic ran fine on shared hosting. The problem was not the host. The problem was the name.
A "cloud server" meant one Docker container on a shared host. The power it could use came and went. Their app hit that limit each morning. It hit it between 9 and 11 AM. That is when the drivers checked in.
That is why this guide exists. "Cloud server," "VPS," and "bare metal" mean different things at each host. The gaps show up once you move past a brochure. Read the fine print.
What each term means.
Cloud server (container).
Here, a "cloud server" means a managed container. Or a light virtual machine (VM). You order it from a control panel. It has apps you can install. You can deploy with one click. You do not do much admin work. You get a site that runs. That could be WordPress, ERPNext, or a Node.js app. You never set one up from scratch.
The tech under it can differ. It might be Docker containers run by Kubernetes (K3s). Or LXD containers. It might be a VM with a light template. One thing is the same. You never touch the host hardware. You never touch the layer under it. That layer splits one server into many. The host does the rest.
VPS (virtual private server).
A VPS is a VM on KVM or OpenVZ. The host stays shared. Your parts do not. You get a full operating system (OS). You get root access. That means you can change all of it. You get parts of the server. They are set aside for you. That means the central processing unit (CPU). It means random access memory (RAM) too. You get storage as well. These parts do not shrink and grow. They are yours. A container works in its own way. A VPS runs its own kernel. That kernel is the core of the OS. You can build software. You can tune the kernel. You can install any Linux. You can set firewall rules as you need.
KVM is the type that matters in 2026. Lots of Indian hosts still sell OpenVZ. It shares the host kernel with other sites. Its promise of parts is softer. You get a real wall between sites.
Bare metal server.
A bare metal server is one whole machine for you. There is no extra layer of software. There are no noisy neighbours. Nothing is shared. The CPU, RAM, storage, and network all belong to you. You get the full speed of the hardware. This helps work that needs a lot of CPU. It helps when that work runs for a long time. It helps work that needs lots of RAM. It helps work that needs fast storage.
The trade-off is how fast you can change things. A bare metal server takes hours to set up, not seconds. To upgrade, you swap the hardware. You cannot change the plan size. Only the hardware can grow.
Side by side.
Here is how the three compare.
| Cloud server (container) | KVM VPS | Bare metal | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time to set up. | Seconds to minutes. | A few minutes. | Hours to days. |
| Who shares it. | Other sites share it. | No. Your parts are set aside. | No. The whole machine is yours. |
| Root or kernel access. | No. The container keeps you out. | Yes. You get root access. | Yes. You get root access. |
| Your own OS or kernel. | No. We pick it for you. | Yes. You pick it. | Yes. You pick it. |
| Steady speed. | Fair. The host is shared. | Good. Your parts are set aside. | The best. Nothing is shared. |
| How you grow. | Up. You move to a bigger plan. | Up. You move to a bigger plan. | Out. You add more servers. |
| Cost per month. | The lowest of the three. | In the middle. | The highest of the three. |
| Who does the work. | We do all of it. | You do it, or we help. | You do it, or we help. |
| Best for. | Apps that are ready to run, new firms, side work. | Business apps, your own stack, sites that grow. | Heavy CPU work, big databases, rules you must meet. |
When cloud server (container) is the right choice.
A container platform makes sense when you want a known app live fast. It makes sense when you do not want to run the server. You let us run it. We do the work. If you use WordPress, ERPNext, Ghost, or any of the usual web app stacks, we run it for you. You can work on the app itself.
The speed is fair. It is not the fastest you can get. A container gets a share of the host. The speed depends on what else the host is doing. Light traffic is fine. Heavy traffic is not. If lots of users use the site at once, you will hit the limit of the host. The same goes for heavy jobs in the background. You can move up to a bigger plan. That move has a limit too.
Choose a cloud server if.
- You run a standard app stack, such as WordPress, ERPNext, Ghost, or n8n.
- You do not want to run the system yourself.
- Your traffic is steady and fits the plan you pick.
- You want to go live in minutes, not hours.
Our managed containers run on K3s in Gujarat. Each app we support deploys with one click. You get an app. You never touch a terminal.

A KVM VPS is the right choice when you need parts of a server. Those parts are set aside for you. It is right too when you want full control of the OS. You get steady speed. You do not need the whole machine. Or the cost of one is too much for you.
KVM makes sure what we give you is really yours. No noisy neighbour can take it. No promise that melts away under load. Steady speed matters more for business apps. That covers a CRM, an API, or a site you built yourself. The top speed of a bare metal box matters less.

Choose KVM VPS if.
- You run an app stack of your own that needs deep access to the system.
- You need CPU and RAM that are set aside for you, not shared.
- You want to add software, set up a service, or tune the kernel.
- Your traffic grows, and you want a clear way to move up.
Our KVM VPS plans in India give you your own CPU. You get fast local storage and root access too. You pick the mix of parts that fits your work. You do not get a fixed bundle.

Bare metal makes sense when the work needs the full speed of the machine. It makes sense too when you cannot spread the work. You cannot spread it over lots of VMs.
A busy database is the clearest case. A database that answers thousands of queries each second wants the full RAM. It wants the fast CPU cache of a machine of its own. A VPS running that database uses only the CPU parts we gave it. That layer adds a small delay too. The storage is not real either.
Rules about data and where it sits can push you to it too. Some rules say the app must run on its own machine. No other site may sit next to it. If a law or a certificate says that, a VPS does not meet the rule. Not even if the host calls it its own.
Choose bare metal if.
- You run a busy database, a heavy app, or work that fills up a VPS.
- Your rules ask for hardware of your own.
- You need the most disk speed and cannot wait for a virtual disk.
- You have a DevOps team that can set up and look after bare metal.
Bare metal costs more. It takes longer to change too. If a VPS can hold your work, you pay for hardware you never use.

Ask these questions in order. Take them one by one.
1. What app are you running? Is it a standard stack, such as WordPress, ERPNext, or Ghost? Then you do not need to change the system. Pick a cloud server. Is it your own app? Or do you need root access? Then pick a VPS.
2. What does your traffic look like now, and in 12 months? Is your traffic fair and steady? Then pick a cloud server or a VPS. The app type picks which one. If it jumps up and down, pick a VPS. A VPS gives you a floor of resources. If it is always high and still growing, pick bare metal or a group of VPS servers.
3. Do you have a sysadmin or a DevOps engineer? If not, pick a cloud server. We run it for you. If yes, pick a VPS or bare metal. Your workload picks.
4. Do you have rules about data and where it sits? If the data must be on its own hardware, pick bare metal. If it can sit on VMs that are set apart, pick a KVM VPS. If any good host will do, pick a cloud server.
5. What is your monthly budget? Live prices sit on /pricing. A cloud server costs the least. A VPS costs more, and gives you more CPU and RAM. Bare metal costs the most. See full pricing for all three types. Match the tier to what a failure costs. A side project that fails costs the least each month. A production API that fails costs more than the gap between plans.
The India factor.
If you serve users in India, delay matters. Each extra ms on a round trip shows up in how the site feels. It adds up too when a page pulls in dozens of files.
A host in India sits closer to your users. A host abroad does not. It helps if the site has good links to other networks. This holds for all three types. Where the servers sit should be part of your choice. Do not leave it as a last thought.
All our hosting runs in Gujarat. Each plan sits on the same path to the main Indian internet exchanges. If you serve users in India, ask each host where the servers sit. Ask which carriers they link with. Our DPDPA data guide. It covers the legal side of hosting in India.

No type is best for all. The right choice rests on your app. It rests on your traffic. It rests on what your team can look after. It rests on your budget.
Not sure where you land? Start with the managed option, the cloud server. Move up when you hit a limit. It is easier to grow a site that already works. It is harder to size a site you have not started. We have a guide on where to host: India, Singapore, or the US.
If you want to know which type fits your work, message us on WhatsApp. We will help you match the work to the right plan. No bundles. No lock-in. You pay by the month. It takes one message. We reply the same day.
