Element is the open-source Matrix client. Your team gets a chat server of its own. It works like Slack, but on your own box. You own the server. The chat history is yours. You can link up with any Matrix server in the world. That is called federation. Here is how to go from "we need a private chat server" to a live Element server. It takes five minutes or less.

Before you start.

You need three things.

  • Your own domain. Or use the free *.webhost24.in URL we give you.
  • A plan that runs apps. The smallest Apps plan runs the chat app. It suits a small team. See live prices on /pricing.
  • Free Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). We add it once your domain points to us.

Step 1 - Open the apps list.

Click Apps on our home page. Then pick the Element card. The set up screen opens.

Step 2 - Name your Matrix server.

Pick a slug. Your Matrix domain is your-slug.webhost24.in. Your Matrix IDs look like @user:your-slug.webhost24.in. You can use your own domain. Type it in the Custom domain field. We will show you the domain name system (DNS) setup.

Step 3 - Pick a plan.

We use your plan. Have you picked one? If not, the set up will pause. It will ask you. The smallest Apps plan fits a team of 10 to 20 users. It works with text, voice, and video.

Step 4 - Wait for the deploy.

We set up the chat app. We add a PostgreSQL database. We add a Redis cache. We add a worker for links to other servers. We switch on SSL. This takes three to five minutes. You can watch it live in your dashboard.

Step 5 - Log in to Element.

Once it turns Live, open the app URL. The first person is asked to make an account. That one is the admin user. We send the first login details on WhatsApp. Change the password when you first log in.

What you get out of the box.

  • Free Let's Encrypt SSL. We renew it for you.
  • Daily PostgreSQL and Redis copies. We keep each one for 7 days.
  • Chat with any other Matrix server in the world.
  • End-to-end encryption for chats and private rooms.
  • Voice and video calls in the browser.
  • Prices in rupees. You pay month to month.

What to do next.

  • Make your first room. Invite your team.
  • Set up push alerts. Use a push gateway.
  • Link to more chat tools. You can connect IRC (Internet Relay Chat), Slack, or Discord.
  • Use your own domain. Then your Matrix ID looks neat.

When to upgrade.

The smallest Apps plan works for teams under 20 users. The next plan up doubles the space and memory (RAM). You get more room for big rooms and media files. You get a managed cache.

That is all it takes. You go from sign up to a chat server of your own. It is hosted in Gujarat. You get free SSL. You get daily backups. If you get stuck, message us on WhatsApp.

Need help?

Ask us on WhatsApp

Our team replies during Indian business hours. Ask us anything about hosting, and we will help. We are the people who run the servers, so we can answer the hard ones too.

That is the end of this post. If you want to keep reading, the posts below are the ones we share with it. We write every post ourselves, and each one stands on its own.

We write about hosting, servers, backups, and the day to day work of running a site for a customer. There is no sales pitch in a post, and every post is free to read.

We write them for the people who run a site from India, and we keep the words plain. We do not write for a prize, and we do not sell you anything here. Read the post, take what you need, and ignore the rest.
