Kubernetes in India: When You Need It and When You Do Not
When it is worth the cost, when it is too much, and what a cluster on Indian hosts costs. Here is a plain guide for teams that build and run apps. We look at cost, time, and the size of your team.
Kubernetes runs containers. It is the most used tool for containers in the world. Many teams pick it too soon. Most jobs do not need it. Here is a plain guide. It is for teams that look at K8s in 2026.
When you need K8s.
- You run 5+ services with no state. Each one scales on its own, by traffic.
- You have an API tier, a worker tier, and a cron tier. Each one has its own scale rule.
- You have many teams. Each one needs its own space and its own share of resources.
- You do blue green and canary deploys. You write these in a file (Deployment, Service, Ingress). The file manages them.
- You scale up on a metric (CPU, memory, queue depth). The cloud tool does not fit.
When you don't.
- You run 1-2 long services. Put them on container hosting. Skip the control layer.
- You have one team. A compose file and a proxy will do.
- You do rolling deploys. A
docker runon the next box will do. - Your traffic is flat, not bursty. A fixed size wins.
What it costs in India.
K8s is free. The cluster it runs on is not free. The price depends on the plan you pick from /pricing.
Here are the usual ranges for K8s on the Linux Dedicated pool. All of them come with no traffic cap.
- Small dev cluster (1 control plane + 2 workers, 4 vCPU + 8 GB each): about Rs 7,000-15,000 / month.
- The price depends on your setup. One L2 box costs less. Split workers keep each one apart.
- Use the
/pricingplan list to get a live quote. - Production cluster (3 control planes + 4 workers, 8 vCPU + 32 GB each): in the L3-L4 range on the
/pricinglist. - The price scales with the plan mix you choose.
- Cluster with no single point of failure (3 control planes + 6 workers, 16 vCPU + 64 GB each). It sits at the top of that pool.
- That tier needs an external load balancer.
We do not ship "Kubernetes" as a fixed cost plan. Each job is different. Get a real quote on WhatsApp. We will size the right tier.
When to use a managed K8s service instead.
Do you have a team that can run a K8s control plane 24x7? If not, do not run your own K8s. Let someone else run it for you (EKS, GKE, AKS). Or use our k3s managed Apps tier. It is live now. See /hosting/appHosting. A control plane engineer costs more than the cluster.
If your job fits in 1-3 containers, run it on the Apps tier. Skip the control layer. The K8s tax (learning curve, control plane, watching the app) is not worth it for such a job.
