WebHost24 vs DigitalOcean DOKS: A Full Look for India Teams

We put both hosts side by side for a team that runs apps for buyers. We check speed, cost, bill, and help. We look at each host and set out the facts on one page you can read.

DOKS (DigitalOcean Kubernetes) and WebHost24 Apps both run apps for teams in India. They do two jobs, so a fair look needs care. This post puts both on one table. You can then pick the one that fits your team. We will not sell you the wrong one. The plan is month to month. You can leave at any time.

What each product is.

DOKS is a managed K8s service. It runs the control plane for you. The control plane is the part that takes orders. It hands out the work. That part covers the application programming interface (API) server. It covers the etcd store and the scheduler too. You bring your own worker nodes. A worker node is one machine that runs your app. They are Droplets. You run the node system yourself. DOKS is K8s from the start. Any app that runs on it runs here. You do not touch the servers. That split is the whole story.

Apps is a managed app service. You send us an app image. An app image is a full copy of your app and all it needs. We run it for you. We look after the cluster. We look after the node system. We look after the scaling and the servers under it. Apps does not use K8s by default. Most teams do not need it. You get fewer things to think about. One app image. Auto scaling on the central processing unit (CPU) and random access memory (RAM). Secure links. Pushes that start when you push your code. You just push your code. We watch the app for you.

The depth is not the same. You get the full API from DOKS. The API is how other code asks your app to do things. The team that helps you size a plan is the one you ask. Apps gives you a small set of choices on top of one app. If your team needs the full API, DOKS costs you less work. If your team only wants to ship an app, Apps gets you there faster. You do not own the cluster. You pick a plan. We do the rest. One plan. One bill. One team to ask. You get one team for all of it. You keep the keys to your site.

Where they differ.

Latency in India.

The closest region to most Indian cities is Bangalore (BLR). We run in Palitana, Gujarat.

Rough one-way delays from a Mumbai 4G link. A link is the path your data takes to you. Contact us for the latest numbers. Your app runs where your users are. The trip is shorter for them. The wait is less. The site will load fast. They wait less. The site feels quick.

Data residency and DPDPA 2023.

Both firms can host your work in India. One gives you clear legal ground. The other gives you choices.

BLR sits in India. So does your data. But the US firm has its main office in the US. It works through Irish firms too. Your data may come under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDPA) 2023. Then your data processing agreement (DPA) sits with a firm. That firm may have to answer to a court in another land. A host here does not have that gap. Your data stays in one country. It stays here. The law is ours.

We are an Indian firm. Our DPA is with a firm here. Indian law applies to it. Startups and small firms often have to answer a DPDPA audit. They need a clear trail of data in India. A host here cuts one question from that list. You can say where it is.

Bills and foreign exchange (FX).

They bill in US dollars (USD). Those are the money of the US. You pay by credit card or PayPal. Indian firms that pay in Indian rupees (INR) pay an FX fee of 1-3%. That fee depends on your card issuer. It depends on the rate of the day too. A team that spends $200 a month on DOKS pays close to Rs 17,000-18,000 each month. The sum moves with the rate. The exact amount moves too. It is not the same each month.

We bill in INR. You can pay by Unified Payments Interface (UPI). You can pay by net banking or card. There is no exchange step at all. There is no rate to chase. If your books need a clean INR line, this saves you work each month. There is no FX fee on our bill. We bill in rupees. You pay in rupees. No bank can change it. The bill has no hidden part. Your plan has no hidden part. The rate does not touch your bill. No bank will change the rate on you. Your bill is the same each month.

Support model.

Their support runs on a ticket system. You get user forums and docs too. Response times depend on your plan. It may be shared, standard, or priority.

Our support is WhatsApp-first. It runs during Indian business hours. You do not need a portal. The team that helps you size a plan is the one you message when a site breaks. A startup with no 24/7 team gets a quick answer on WhatsApp. We are in the same time zone. The team and the servers sit in India. We are up when you are. We reply on the same day. We send the same reply to all plans. You have one place to ask. You will not wait a whole night. You do not need a phone call. We set up the app for you.

Scaling.

Scaling means adding power when more users use your app. DOKS scales at the node level. You add or remove Droplets to act as worker nodes. To scale on your own, you need the Cloud Controller or your own autoscaler. The built-in tools work, but they need a cluster set up first. One of them is the Horizontal Pod Autoscaler.

Apps scales one app at a time. You set the min and max count. The platform then scales on CPU and RAM limits. You never touch a node. You can add more power when you need it. The app gets more room. You do not touch a node. It runs where your users are. If you want more room without thinking about nodes, this way is simpler.

Honest trade-offs.

Pick the one that fits your team. Both are real tools. Both work well.

Choose DOKS when.

  • You need the full K8s API, with custom resource types and cluster-wide role-based access control (RBAC).
  • Your team runs K8s today and wants the same pattern in India.
  • You need work in more than one place. You need it in two places at once. They have more regions than we do. If you want a backup site in Singapore as well as in Bangalore, DOKS can do that. We cannot do it today.
  • You need a node size that we do not offer. A Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) Droplet is one case. So is a Droplet with more memory.

Choose Apps when.

  • You want to run an app without owning the cluster. You want the app to just work.
  • You want a clean INR bill and you prefer support on WhatsApp. You get one team for all of it.
  • Your main customers are in India and you want an Indian DPA for DPDPA rules. You keep the keys.
  • You are a startup or a small firm. The easy set up lets your team ship faster.

The team gives you a rough size in under an hour. We will not lock you in. You do not pay to ask. It takes one message. That is all we need. There is no setup fee. There is no bill for the move. There is no fee for the change. You can cancel at any time. The old plan can stay on for a while. We keep a copy of your site for 7 days. Your visitors see no change. Your site stays up.
