Why a Fast Disk Matters More for Indian Sites

A slow disk is not just a line on a spec sheet. On Indian phone networks, the trip to a far server costs 80 to 150ms. Your disk has the last say on speed. Here are the facts.

When you look at web hosting in India, the disk feels like a tick on a list. It is one line in the spec sheet. The spec sheet is the list of numbers a host gives you. Most Indian hosts mention the disk. Many foreign hosts hide it. Buyers often skip it. It sounds like a detail of the servers. It sounds like it does not matter to you.

This is a mistake. The disk is one of the biggest factors in how fast a page loads. On Indian mobile networks, each extra ms adds up. It is the gap between two kinds of site. One turns visits into sales. The other does not.

The problem with slow disks.

The physics are simple. An old spinning disk has plates that spin. It has a head that moves to find the data you ask for. The head has to wait for the right spot to come around. That wait is the seek time. The usual seek time is 8-12ms per read. On a busy shared host, you might share that head with 200 other sites. The result is sudden slow moments of 50-200ms on each read or write.

Now add the Indian mobile network. A user in Bengaluru on Jio 4G waits for the network path. The path is the way the data goes. It leads to a server in Palitana, Gujarat. Add the database queries. Add the secure link setup. Add the page build. A site on slow shared disks can feel slow before the page even starts.

A WordPress page loads about ten things at once. That is ten queries. And ten files. Each one has a small wait. Multiply that delay by ten. The wait gets bad fast. A slow disk slows the whole page. The page waits on the disk. Each query waits its turn. A slow disk cannot keep up. Each file you ask for waits. That wait is what a visitor feels. It is the first thing to fix.

A fast local disk cuts the time the head would spend moving. A Solid State Drive (SSD) has no moving parts at all. So the delay stays the same even when the site is busy. It lifts the Core Web Vitals numbers. The next section explains what those numbers are.

The Core Web Vitals.

Google's Core Web Vitals measure three things. Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) is how fast the big part of your page shows up. First Input Delay (FID) is how fast the page answers when a person taps it. Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) is how much the page jumps around while it loads. The disk does not change CLS on its own. It has a large effect on LCP and FID. For Indian workloads, it gives a much better LCP and FID than a slow disk.

The LCP number shows how fast the largest part of your page loads. On a slow host, the database queries that build the page wait for the disk. The PHP process waits for the disk. Then it waits for the next query. The HTML builds slowly. The page takes longer to build. The browser shows a blank screen for longer.

A fast local disk makes the database faster. Queries that used to wait on a busy shared disk get faster. That happens once the disk has no seek time. The page builds faster. LCP gets better on most WordPress pages. Speed is what a buyer can feel.

What about the cost?

Fast disks cost more. This is true in each country. It is true at WebHost24. Local flash disks cost 3-5x more per GB than a spinning disk. The price gap has shrunk since 2020. It has not closed.

Here is the trade-off that matters. What is a 200ms cut in page load worth to your business? You pay for this on each visit.

A 1-second delay in mobile page load cuts sales by up to 20%. Google published that in 2018. People still cite it. The people behind it have not changed. If your Indian online store does Rs 5 lakhs per month in sales, a 200ms gain is worth a lot. It is worth Rs 1 lakh per month in sales you get back. The extra cost of the disk at that level of sales is Rs 200-500 per month.

The math is not subtle.

Why some hosts use slow disks.

The honest answer is cost. It is the same for each host. A 4TB spinning disk costs under Rs 3,000. A 500GB fast local drive costs Rs 4,500-6,000. On a shared host with 200 sites per server, that is Rs 6 per site per month. That is the extra disk cost to win back. Some hosts keep slow disks to get a better margin. Not because it is better for you. We did not choose the slow path.

You will see slow disks on "unlimited" plans. Unlimited is sales talk. In plain words: we set up one big disk. We do not track how much you use. It is a word on the plan, not a fact on the disk. The other 199 sites on that disk are using it hard too. That is the problem. Your "unlimited" plan depends on what the disk can do.

What we do that is different.

Each plan at WebHost24 runs on a fast local disk. There is no slow tier. There is no spinning rust. There is no budget option with a slow patch on it. Our smallest plan gets the same storage as our plan with the most memory. Each plan we sell has the same fast disk. Live prices sit on /pricing. That page has the price of each plan we sell.

This was a choice. Our Palitana data centre was built in 2024. We did not start with old servers. We chose fast disks from day one. We think sites on Indian networks deserve better. The disk should match the delay budget.

How to check your host.

You can tell by running a simple command. You can check this in one minute. The command is short and plain. Run it and look at the answer.

cat /sys/block/sda/queue/rotational

If it returns 1, you have a spinning disk. If it returns 0, you have fast local storage.

If you are on shared hosting and cannot run commands, look at one number. Look at the input and output wait in your server metrics. A wait above 5% most of the time points to a slow disk. It is a strong sign you are on a slow disk. It is just as strong a sign you are on one with too many sites on it.

The bottom line.

Fast disks are not a tick on a list. A fast disk is not a luxury. It is part of the plan. It lifts all your other speed work. On Indian mobile networks, the delay budget is tight. Slow disks look cheap. They cost you more.

If your current host is on slow disks, the move to a fast host in India takes less than two hours. We will not charge you for the move. Message us on WhatsApp with your current specs. You can ask us on WhatsApp. We will size a new plan that fits your traffic. We reply the same day. We do the work for you. You can cancel at any time. We do not lock you in. We keep a copy of your site for 7 days. We plan the move so your site stays up.
